On December 1st the Missoula County Commissioners passed a resolution to adopt a Preferred Alternative suggested by WGM Group that will serve as a Master Plan for providing public water service to the Wye Area. WGM Group also produced an extensive Engineering Report, which discusses every alternative. It is available upon request.

The Wye Area is an unincorporated area of Missoula County located approximately nine miles northwest of the City of Missoula near the interchange of Interstate 90 and US Highway 93.  This area includes numerous commercial and light industrial businesses and well as hotels, restaurants and residential homes and is identified in Missoula County and City of Missoula planning documents as an area for future growth. Water service for most properties is provided by individual wells or small public water systems for individual businesses. Today there are over 250 wells within the area.

Preferred Alternative: Two Water Systems

1. North & Partial South System - Expansion of Wye Area Water Company with Supply at WZ-2 and Storage at RS-2

2. Partial South System - Expansion of Mountain Water Company with Supply and Storage from Mountain Water Company

Benefits

  • Provides a guiding document for providing water service to the Wye Area
  • Meets goals and objectives of Wye Mullan West Comprehensive Plan:
  • "Collaboratively plan for cost effective public services."
  • "Coordinate infrastructure planning among government agencies, private sector groups and the general public."
  • "Plan and install infrastructure prior to development."
  • Ensures future water facilities will have capacity to serve the area
  • Reduces the number of new wells in the area
  • Reduces the number of new, small, public water systems in the area
  • Improves public health and safety
  • Improves fire protection
  • Encourages economic development
  • Implementation does not have to burden landowners with another large RSID
  • Water system can be built as landowners need water service
  • If funding becomes available, the project is ready to go
  • Missoula County has had an active role in determining how essential services can be provided
