The Impacts of Transportation Costs
WGM Group is well aware of the impact transportation costs have on our employees' discretionary income. Every hike in gas prices is a pay cut to our employees. For a number of years, we have provided bus passes to our employees through the Missoula Downtown Association. We also encourage biking, walking, and car pooling, and we participate in the annual Bike/Bus/Walk week. We provide company vehicles for necessary work-related trips, or for the occasional emergency or late night.
We find these programs get limited use by our employees. Bus service is not convenient enough to make the switch from driving. Forty minutes by bus simply cannot compete with fifteen minutes in the car. Biking and walking to our office requires navigating busy streets and intersections that were designed primarily with cars in mind.
We believe that to make a real difference for our employees, we need more frequent bus service (15 minute headways), more efficient routes, better bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and mixed use/density development that supports transit.
